- Planting season: new lawns, beds, shrubs and trees
- Summer: protect what is planted, plan what comes next
By the end of summer, most Dubai gardens look tired. Lawns have thinned under the sun, seasonal flowers burned out months ago, shrubs carry scorched tips, and the irrigation has been running on its summer programme since May. The good news is that the cool season ahead is the best time of year to fix all of it. Garden landscaping in Dubai follows the weather, and from October the weather is finally on your side.
This page explains why winter is the right season for a garden makeover, what a makeover can include, what it typically costs, and which plants to put in now so the garden still looks good next summer.
Why winter is the best time for garden landscaping in Dubai
A new plant does not need beautiful weather to look good on the day it goes in. It needs time to grow roots out of its nursery pot and into the soil around it. That is what keeps it alive when the air reaches 45°C. In Dubai, the only time a plant can build those roots without fighting heat stress is the cool season.
The short answer: a shrub planted in October has around six mild months to establish before summer. The same shrub planted in June has to survive its first heatwave with a root system no bigger than the pot it came in. It needs far more water, and a good share of summer plantings never recover.
Lower water bills while plants establish
New planting always needs extra water for the first few months. In winter that extra demand is modest. In summer the same garden can need several times more irrigation just to keep new plants alive, and you pay for it on every DEWA bill.
Better choice at the nurseries
Seasonal flowers, bedding plants and fresh stock of shrubs and trees arrive for the cool season. Early in the season you choose from the full range, not what is left over.
Faster, better work on site
Landscaping crews can work full days in comfortable temperatures instead of stopping for the midday heat. Soil preparation, turf laying and hardscape curing all go better in mild weather, and your project finishes sooner.
The garden is ready when you actually use it
November to March is when Dubai families live outdoors: breakfasts on the terrace, barbecues, children on the lawn. A makeover finished in October or November gives you the whole outdoor season to enjoy it.
What a winter garden makeover can include
Every garden starts from a different place, so a makeover is built from three groups of work. Some gardens only need the first. Others need all three.

What to plant in a Dubai garden this winter
The cool season lets you plant almost anything, but the smart choice mixes short-lived winter colour with plants that will still be standing next August. Here is what works.
| Plant type | Good choices for Dubai | Plant in | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seasonal flowers | Petunia, marigold, pansy, snapdragon, dianthus, alyssum, calendula, geranium | Oct – Dec | Colour through winter into spring. Most fade by April or May, when they are swapped for summer flowers. |
| Flowering shrubs | Bougainvillea, ixora, lantana, hibiscus, oleander, jasmine | Oct – Feb | Roots settle over winter, flowers come strongly in spring, and the plant copes with summer once established. |
| Trees | Ghaf, neem, sidr, citrus, frangipani, date palm | Oct – Mar | Plant trees early in the season. The larger the tree, the longer it needs to establish before summer. |
| Lawns | Paspalum or Bermuda turf; artificial grass can go in at any time | Oct – Apr | New turf roots within a few weeks in cool weather. Laid in summer, it needs heavy watering just to survive. |
| Kitchen garden | Tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, coriander, mint, basil, parsley | Oct – Jan | Harvests through winter and spring. Raised beds with good soil make it far easier. |
General guidance for outdoor villa gardens in Dubai. Shaded courtyards, rooftops and coastal plots may call for different choices, which we confirm at the site visit.
Plan the summer swap now
Winter annuals will not survive a Dubai summer, and that is fine. They are meant to be replaced. When they fade in April or May, heat-tolerant flowers such as vinca, portulaca and zinnia take over the same beds. Designing the beds with both seasons in mind means the swap takes an afternoon rather than a replant.
Planting near a pool? Skip bougainvillea, large palms and ficus within a few metres of the water. They drop leaves and flowers constantly and their roots can lift paving. Our pool maintenance guide lists better choices for pool surrounds.
How a winter makeover works, step by step
This is the sequence for a typical garden makeover. A simple refresh skips straight from the site visit to planting and is often finished in a day or two.

We measure the garden, check soil, sun and shade, test the irrigation, and talk through how you want to use the space and what you want to spend.
-
Design and fixed quote
Within a few days
You receive a layout, a plant list and a written scope with a fixed price. If the work includes structures or major hardscape, we prepare what your community needs for approval.
-
Groundwork
Week 1
Clearance, soil improvement, levels and drainage, and new irrigation lines laid before anything is planted.
-
Hard landscaping
Week 1 to 2
Paths, edging, paving and pergola bases go in, along with cable runs for lighting.
-
Planting and lawn
Week 2 to 3
Trees first, then shrubs and beds, and the lawn last, so nothing new gets walked on.
-
Handover and establishment care
The next 90 days
Irrigation set for the season, a written care schedule, and follow-up visits while the new planting roots in.
Book a few weeks before the season starts. Demand for landscaping crews and nursery stock is highest in October and November. If the site visit and design happen in September, planting can start the week the weather turns.
Looking after your garden through the Dubai winter
Winter is the easy season, but it has its own mistakes. These are the ones we see most.
- Cut irrigation back gradually. Plants need much less water once temperatures drop. Overwatering in winter causes root rot and fungal problems faster than underwatering.
- Water early in the morning. Leaves dry during the day, which keeps fungal disease down.
- Feed in October. Plants start growing again as the heat breaks, and a feed at the start of the season pays off all winter.
- Prune summer damage, then stop. Remove scorched and dead growth early in the season. Shape flowering shrubs a few weeks before they bloom, not during.
- Deadhead seasonal flowers. Pinching off spent flowers keeps petunias and marigolds blooming for months longer.
- Check drainage before the rains. Winter showers in January and February are short but heavy. Low spots, blocked channels and paving that falls towards the house show up fast.
- Watch for pests as growth picks up. Aphids, whitefly and mealybug arrive with the new leaves. Catching them early avoids heavy spraying later.
If you would rather hand all of this over, our garden maintenance service takes care of it on a weekly or fortnightly schedule.
Why villa owners choose Dream Floor Landscaping
We have been designing, building and maintaining gardens in Dubai since 2008. That is more than fifteen winters of planting and fifteen summers of seeing what survives. The plant lists and irrigation settings we recommend come from that experience, not from a catalogue.
We also handle the parts of a garden most landscapers pass to someone else: hard landscaping, pergolas, outdoor lighting, irrigation and swimming pools. One team plans and builds the whole garden, so nothing is left for another contractor to redo.
We work across Dubai's villa communities, including Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, Palm Jumeirah, Emirates Hills, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Jumeirah Islands, Jumeirah Park, The Springs, The Meadows, The Lakes, Damac Hills, Al Barsha, Al Furjan, Mirdif, Umm Suqeim and Victory Heights.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to landscape a garden in Dubai?
October to April. Temperatures are mild enough for new plants to root before summer, crews can work full days, and new planting needs far less water to establish. October and November are the most popular months, so book your site visit a few weeks ahead.
How much does a garden makeover cost in Dubai?
A garden refresh typically costs AED 3,500 to 9,000, a makeover with new planting, lawn and irrigation AED 12,000 to 35,000, and a full redesign with hard landscaping and structures from AED 40,000. These are Dubai market ranges for 2026 excluding VAT. Your fixed quote follows a free site visit.
How long does a garden makeover take?
A refresh takes one to three days. A makeover with new planting, lawn and irrigation usually takes one to three weeks. A full transformation with paving, structures and lighting takes three to eight weeks, depending on size and any community approvals.
Can I plant a new garden in summer?
You can, but it costs more and fails more often. Plants go in with small root systems and face 45°C heat straight away, so they need far more water and some will not survive. If summer is the only option, choose heat-tolerant plants, plant late in the day, and budget for replacements.
Which flowers last all winter in Dubai?
Petunias, marigolds, pansies, snapdragons, dianthus, alyssum, calendula and geraniums all flower well from late autumn into spring when planted between October and December. Deadheading keeps them blooming for longer. Most fade by May and are replaced with summer flowers such as vinca and portulaca.
Should I choose natural grass or artificial grass?
Natural grass costs less to install and stays cooler underfoot, but needs regular watering, mowing and feeding. Artificial grass costs more upfront, needs almost no water and looks the same all year, but gets hot in direct summer sun. Many villas use natural grass in the main lawn and artificial grass in shaded or high-traffic corners.
Do I need community approval for garden work?
Planting and lawn work usually do not need approval. Structures such as pergolas, major hardscape changes and pools usually need an NOC from your developer or community management. Rules differ between communities, so we check what applies to yours and prepare the drawings they ask for.
Do you maintain the garden after the makeover?
Yes. Every makeover includes establishment care, and most clients continue with a weekly or fortnightly garden maintenance plan so the new planting is looked after through its first summer.
